We are halfway through the year and well into the summer movie season. So I thought I’d take a look ahead and countdown some of my most keenly anticipated movies from the remainder of 2017. I have a total of seven films to talk about, so let’s get started…
ATOMIC BLONDE (09/08/17)
Who doesn’t look forward to a crazy action movie? Atomic Blonde stars Charlize Theron as an undercover MI6 agent who is sent to Berlin to investigate the murder of a fellow agent. The film includes a star-studded cast including the likes of James McAvoy, John Goodman and Sofia Boutella. The action looks incredible, the plot looks straight up spy/thriller, overall looks like a brutal, chaotic action movie, happy days!
THOR: RAGNAROK (27/10/17)
Now I’m hoping this one is going to be better than the last two Thor’s! Thor is imprisoned and must fight for survival if he is to save his home world of Asgard from destruction. Adding another Avenger into the mix with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, could make for an interesting dynamic and I’m sure, some incredible action. I’m also looking forward to see what has happened to Hulk and how he ended up participating in gladiatorial battles after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (11/07/17)
I’m a big fan of the rebooted apes movies, and when the last one ended I was already pumped for the next installment. Things to expect from this movie; stunning visuals, a gripping story and some memorable characters. Woody Harrelson as the villain looks interesting, and a worthy adversary for Andy Serkis’s Caesar. Where other franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean and Transformers are suffering with “franchise fatigue”, I hope the apes franchise continues their great form with more movies down the line because War looks awesome!
KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE (20/09/17)
Now the first movie was a surprise… Matthew Vaughn brought us back to the days of old school spy thrillers with Kingsman: The Secret Service and now he returns with the sequel. After their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and his Kingsman must team up with another organisation to save the world. We saw a brief trailer earlier this year that didn’t show too much, but for this next instalment, I’m hoping for more of the witty humour and incredible action we saw in the first movie, it is going to be hard to top the church scene from the first one however. With the addition of Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges and Channing Tatum among other newcomers, this looks like it could be as good, if not, better than the first, we’ll see…
JUSTICE LEAGUE (17/11/17)
This one is going to go one of two ways…it will either build upon the success of Wonder Woman and help kick-start the DC Extended Universe, or it will flop big time, like many other DC movies. I’m hoping it does well, my only worry is that they may have rushed forming the Justice League without first doing origin stories for the rest of the team. However, the trailer looked cool, the Batfleck is back, and Jason Mamoa looks awesome as Aquaman. DC get criticised a lot for their darker tone, so here’s hoping for a bit more humour, but having characters like The Flash will accomplish that, hopefully. I just hope it is not too CGI heavy… Zack Snyder, please don’t mess this one up, if you do, you may need to stop directing DC movies, just a thought…
STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (14/12/17)
I’d be crazy if I wasn’t excited for The Last Jedi. We got a brief teaser trailer and the hype is real. The Force Awakens was basically a rehash of A New Hope, that’s not a bad thing, but TLJ needs to expand these characters and stories which they obviously will. Looking forward to seeing more Mark Hamill, hopefully he has more than just *stare intensely* to do in this one. I’m just looking forward to meeting up with our heroes again and seeing what the fallout of TFA has done and how it has affected them. How is Finn’s recovery going? Who are Rey’s parents? Who is Snoke? What’s next for Kylo Ren? How did Captain Phasma get out of the trash compacter? We have so many questions and they need answering!!!
IT (08/09/17)
I have been looking forward to this film all year and I still have to wait until September! I feel like this needed rebooting, and from pictures and trailers it seems we have a more frightening incarnation of Pennywise the Clown. Don’t get me wrong, Tim Curry’s portrayal in 1990 was iconic but his look needed to be updated for the new generation, and Bill Skarsgard looks absolutely horrifying. For those of you who haven’t seen the original, the film follows a group of kids as they are terrorised by a demon, who takes the form of a clown, he then returns years later to terrorise them again as adults. This film looks like it is focusing on the part when they were kids as opposed to the TV movie which split into two parts, kids then same kids all grown up. Creepy imagery, good child actors and a terrifying clown will all, hopefully, make for a great horror movie. The infamous Georgie scene has been recreated, here’s hoping for a few more iconic moments getting a retouch.
