Sports are coming to Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming app Max

Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming app Max is adding live sports events to its lineup. Starting on October 5th, Max will simulcast sports events that are already aired on TNT and TBS, such as Major League Baseball’s postseason. This new membership tier, called “Bleacher Report (B/R) Sports Add-On,” will also include NHL, NBA, NCAA March Madness, and U.S soccer games. Max subscribers can access the sports content for free until February 29th, after which it will cost an additional $9.99 per month.

This move by Warner Bros. Discovery aims to target a younger audience that prefers streaming services over traditional pay-TV bundles. The company’s streaming segment has been profitable in the first half of the year, and they expect this trend to continue for the full year.

Changes and additions to Max

Max has undergone various changes in the past year, including a merger between HBO Max and Discovery+ apps. In addition, Max has struck a deal with AMC Networks to feature over 200 episodes of recent shows from the cable-TV network for two months.

CEO David Zaslav confirmed during the company’s earnings call that sports and news would be added to the app. On September 27th, Max will also introduce CNN Max, a 24/7 live news hub featuring content from the network’s top anchors.

Pricing and content

Max currently offers two tiers – an ad-free tier priced at $15.99 per month and a cheaper option with commercials priced at $9.99 per month. While the price was increased earlier this year, there are plans to potentially raise prices again in the future. In addition to MLB’s postseason, the Max sports tier will include 60 live NHL regular season games, 65 NBA regular season matchups, and postseason games for both leagues. It will also feature live video and other content from Bleacher Report.
