A decade after it first gripped audiences at Chichester Festival Theatre, the D-Day thriller Pressure arrives in cinemas this week as a major international film starring Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser.
The film, which chronicles the high-stakes weather forecasting that determined the timing of the Allied invasion of Normandy, officially opens in UK cinemas on Friday 11 September 2026. However, filmgoers in Chichester can see the production earlier, with previews starting today, 9 September.
The project has a deep-rooted connection to the city. It is a direct adaptation of the hit stage play of the same name, which was a co-production between Chichester Festival Theatre and the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh. The play received its world premiere at the Minerva Theatre on 31 May 2014, with David Haig both writing the script and starring as the lead character, Group Captain James Stagg.
From the Minerva to Hollywood
While the original stage production saw Haig in the central role, the film adaptation features Andrew Scott as the Scottish meteorologist James Stagg. Scott is joined by Academy Award winner Brendan Fraser, who portrays General Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Kerry Condon as Kay Summersby.
David Haig has remained central to the transition from stage to screen, co-writing the screenplay with director Anthony Maras. Haig’s local connection has continued into the current year; he returned to the Chichester stage earlier in 2026 for the world premiere of Magic at the Festival Theatre.
The narrative focuses on the 72 hours leading up to D-Day in June 1944. Stagg is tasked with advising Eisenhower on the weather conditions for the landings, leading to a tense standoff with his American counterpart who predicted clear skies, while Stagg warned of an approaching storm that could have led to a military catastrophe.
The events are historically set at Southwick House, located just a few miles from Chichester near Portsmouth, which served as the headquarters for the Allied commanders.
Where to watch in Chichester
Local screenings are confirmed for both major venues in the city. Cineworld Chichester, located at Chichester Gate, is hosting preview screenings today, Wednesday 9 September, at 12:10, 14:40, 17:10 and 19:40.
Chichester Cinema at New Park will begin showing the film from its general release date on Friday 11 September. Confirmed slots at New Park include daily screenings at 13:30 and 20:00.
