Chichester has officially secured the title of the UK’s “cosiest city” for autumn 2026, topping a national league table of seasonal destinations.

The research, conducted by Betway and released on 25 September, analysed a range of “hygge” metrics including the density of independent bookshops and cafes, the abundance of green spaces, and typical autumn weather conditions. The study highlights the city’s high concentration of traditional amenities relative to its size as a key factor in its national ranking.

According to the data, Chichester boasts six independent bookshops and 67 coffee shops, alongside 15 parks and gardens. Locations such as Priory Park and the Bishop’s Palace Gardens were specifically noted for providing a “snug” autumn atmosphere within the 12th-century cathedral city setting.

Beating the competition

Chichester finished ahead of several well-established tourist hubs to claim the top spot. Brighton took second place in the rankings but was penalised for its high average autumn rainfall, which reached 308mm. Other historic locations trailing Chichester in the “cosiness” stakes included Wells in Somerset and the city of Bath.

The accolade follows a separate positive report for the city earlier this year. In March 2026, The Telegraph ranked Chichester as the 8th best small city in Britain, praising its architectural heritage and cultural offerings.

The study’s focus on independent retail and greenery arrives at a time of high local interest in the seasonal landscape. The announcement coincides with the recent release of local author Kate Mosse’s book “Autumn”, published on 22 September 2026, which celebrates the specific atmosphere of the West Sussex countryside during the colder months.

While the city scored highly for its physical environment and retail variety, it stands in contrast to other recent national metrics; simultaneous reports on digital infrastructure have seen the city struggle in internet quality rankings, suggesting that Chichester’s primary appeal remains rooted in its traditional, physical character rather than its digital connectivity.
