Age UK Chichester & District has launched a local appeal as part of a national campaign to support vulnerable older people during the colder months. The “Great Winter Bag Drop,” which officially commenced on 8 September 2026, encourages residents to donate high-quality pre-loved items to help fund essential services such as the Telephone Friendship Service and the Silver Line Helpline.
The charity is calling on the community to clear out cupboards and wardrobes to provide stock for its city-centre shops. Organisers estimate that a single bag of quality donations can raise approximately £15. This amount is equivalent to the cost of funding one friendship call for an older person experiencing isolation or loneliness.
Where to donate in Chichester
Donations can be taken directly to the two Age UK shops currently operating in the city. Staff and volunteers at these locations are prepared to receive bags of goods during standard opening hours:
- 7 South Street, Chichester (PO19 1EH): Located in the heart of the city’s main shopping thoroughfare.
- 31 Crane Street, Chichester (PO19 1LJ): Situated just off North Street.
The charity has specified that it is looking for quality clothing, shoes, and accessories, as well as books and homeware. Donors are encouraged to ensure items are in good condition to maximise their resale value. For those unable to visit the city centre in person, Age UK also provides a charity shop donation by post service for smaller, lightweight items.
Maximising the impact of donations
Residents can increase the value of their contribution by 25% at no extra cost by signing up for Gift Aid when they drop off their bags. This allows the charity to reclaim the basic rate of tax on the sale price of the items, turning a £15 bag of clothes into nearly £19 for the organisation’s frontline services.
The campaign comes as Chichester Age Concern prepares for a period of increased demand.
