WhatsApp has officially launched a new suite of optional parental controls today, 30 September 2026, aimed at helping families in the UK manage how teenagers interact on the platform. The update introduces a series of oversight tools that allow parents to lock privacy settings while maintaining the app’s standard end-to-end encryption.

The new features are designed specifically for teenagers and differ from the parent-managed accounts for pre-teens that were introduced in March 2026. Under the new system, parents can link their account to their teenager’s to monitor safety settings, but they remain unable to read the content of private messages or listen to calls.

Safety settings and PIN protection

A central part of the update is the introduction of a parental PIN. Once the supervision tools are activated on a teenager’s device, a parent can use this PIN to lock specific privacy settings. This prevents teenagers from independently relaxing security measures, such as who can see their profile photo, their “last seen” status, or who is permitted to add them to group chats.

Parents can also toggle a ‘Limited Content’ mode for Meta AI. This setting is intended to restrict the types of interactions and information the AI assistant provides when used by a minor on the platform.

Group chat monitoring and alerts

While parents cannot see what is being said within a group, the update provides more visibility into group dynamics. Parents will now receive notifications when their teenager joins a new group or leaves an existing one.

Crucially, the system includes a “Group Growth” alert. This notifies the linked parent if a small, private chat group suddenly expands in size. This feature is intended to highlight instances where a teenager might be exposed to a large number of unknown contacts in a rapidly growing community. According to the WhatsApp Blog, these tools are intended to facilitate conversations between parents and teens about online safety rather than provide total surveillance.

The rollout comes as messaging platforms face continued scrutiny regarding the safety of younger users. By keeping the supervision tools optional and distinct from the more restrictive pre-teen accounts, the platform aims to balance the developing autonomy of older children with the safety concerns of their guardians.
