Haywards Heath to Lewes rail line closed for safety checks after derailment

The railway line between Haywards Heath and Lewes has been closed for urgent safety inspections today, Saturday 5 September, just days after the route had reopened following a major derailment.

Southern services on the busy Sussex route have been suspended to allow engineers to examine the infrastructure. The closure comes after the line officially returned to service on Tuesday 1 September, following nearly three weeks of repairs to the track and embankment.

The original incident occurred on 13 August 2026 at 15:54, when the 14:24 Southern service from London Victoria to Eastbourne came off the tracks near the Lewes Tunnel. The derailment involved Class 387 Electrostar units and resulted in 30 people being injured, two of them seriously.

Safety Concerns and Investigation

While the line was declared safe to reopen earlier this week, today’s unscheduled inspection indicates ongoing concerns regarding the integrity of the route. An interim report from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) previously identified a “track geometry irregularity” on the approach to the site where the train derailed.

Network Rail has not yet confirmed the specific nature of the concerns that prompted today’s closure or how long the inspections are expected to last. The move is a significant disruption for regional travel.

Travel Advice for Passengers

With the direct line between Haywards Heath and Lewes blocked, Southern has advised passengers to find alternative routes. Those travelling between London or Haywards Heath and the coast are being told to travel via Brighton to pick up connecting services to Lewes and Eastbourne.

Ticket acceptance is expected to be in place on alternative rail routes and some local bus services, though passengers are urged to check the Southern Railway website or mobile app for the latest live updates before starting their journey. No firm timeline has been provided for when the line will be cleared for services to resume.
