Uckfield resident travels to Nepal disaster zone
An East Sussex man is flying to Nepal this week in a desperate bid to locate his family following a series of devastating flash floods and mudslides. Pramod Poudel, a resident of Uckfield, confirmed he is travelling to the Rasuwa district, north of the capital Kathmandu, after losing contact with his closest relatives.
The disaster, which struck in late September 2024, has decimated local infrastructure, leaving many communities isolated. According to official reports, the death toll has climbed steadily as rescue teams navigate the difficult terrain. At least 165 bodies have reportedly been recovered from the debris in the Rasuwa district alone.
For Mr Poudel, the situation is intensely personal. His wife, parents, brother, and uncle were all in the affected area when the floods hit. Communication with the region has been entirely severed due to widespread power outages and the collapse of mobile phone networks. This lack of information has driven the man from Uckfield to fly to Nepal after flash flooding to seek answers himself.
British nationals among the missing
The scale of the tragedy extends beyond the local population, with international families now fearing the worst. It has been reported that more than 30 British nationals are among those currently unaccounted for following the flooding. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is monitoring the situation as search and recovery operations continue under challenging weather conditions.
While residents in West Sussex recently reviewed the Chichester flood risk, the situation in South Asia remains critical. The intensity of the September weather event in Nepal has been described by regional officials as unprecedented, overwhelming local defences and early warning systems.
UK government aid and relief efforts
In response to the growing humanitarian crisis, the UK Government has provided financial support. The UK offered £5 million to Nepal following devastating flash floods to bolster the Nepalese government’s immediate response efforts. These funds are expected to be directed toward search and rescue operations, as well as providing essential supplies to those displaced by the mudslides.
The loss of life and the high number of missing persons have caused significant distress across the UK. The news follows other recent tragedies affecting local communities, such as when a school was deeply saddened by the death of a family in a Shoreham sea tragedy, highlighting a period of significant loss for many families in the Sussex area.
As Mr Poudel arrives in Kathmandu, the focus remains on the window for finding survivors. However, with the death toll rising and the difficult conditions on the ground in Rasuwa, the search for the missing remains a race against time.
