A London-based non-league goalkeeper has been selected as the next King of the Tooro Kingdom in Uganda.
George Desmond Kamurasi, the 36-year-old captain and goalkeeper for London-based club SE Dons, was named the next Omukama (King) on 4 September 2026. The selection follows the death of his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away in August at the age of 34.
Kamurasi, known to football fans as “Big G”, is a 6ft 6in sports coach who has become a prominent figure in the non-league game.
Royal duties vs non-league football
The appointment has presented a unique dilemma for the goalkeeper, who is reportedly reluctant to leave his life and coaching career in London. Kamurasi was chosen by a 21-member royal succession committee in Fort Portal City, receiving 15 out of 18 cast votes.
The Tooro Kingdom is one of five traditional kingdoms in Uganda, serving as a cultural and ceremonial constitutional monarchy for approximately 2.1 million people. While Kamurasi’s hesitancy has been reported, cultural tradition within the kingdom suggests that refusing the throne is considered an abomination. As a grandson of King George David Matthew Kamurasi Rukidi III, he is a direct descendant of the royal line.
The timing of his transition to the throne may clash with his commitments on the pitch. SE Dons’ fixtures and results for the 2026-2027 season confirm the club’s progression into the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup, but the transition could take the goalkeeper away from football duties.
The Tooro Kingdom administration recently issued an official announcement regarding the passing of the previous monarch, marking the start of the formal transition period. If Kamurasi accepts the role and travels for coronation proceedings, SE Dons may be forced to find a replacement for their captain.
