  • National Trend: A record 31% of UK 18-year-old university applicants intend to live at home for the 2025/26 academic year, up from 22% a decade ago.
  • Chichester Rental Market: While ranked the 3rd cheapest city for student accommodation in the South East, average private rents in Chichester reached £1,328 per month as of July 2024.

Economic Pressures Reshape the University Experience

The traditional image of the British university experience is undergoing a shift as financial pressures dictate where and how students choose to study. According to recent data, more students planning to live at home for university has become a defining trend for the 2025/26 academic year. A record 31% of UK 18-year-old applicants expressed an intention to remain in their family homes while studying, a marked increase from the 22% recorded ten years ago.

This shift is largely attributed to the widening gap between student income and the rising cost of living. Statistics provided by UCAS indicate that more school leavers are living at home to mitigate the financial burden of higher education. Research by the Sutton Trust on the cost of living reveals a monthly shortfall of approximately £502 between the average student maintenance loan and actual living costs, forcing many families to reconsider the viability of traditional halls of residence.

The Local Picture: Chichester Rental Market Trends

For those attending the University of Chichester, the local property market presents a challenging landscape. According to StudentCrowd’s latest rankings, Chichester remains a relatively affordable option compared to its neighbours, currently positioned as the 3rd cheapest city for student accommodation in the South East. However, “affordability” is a relative term in the current economic climate.

As of July 2024, the average private rent in Chichester reached £1,328 per month, representing a 2.8% increase from the previous year. This rise in private rental costs often outpaces the support available through government-provided maintenance loans. For the 2025/26 year, maintenance loans for students living at home start at a minimum of £3,907. This is significantly lower than the £4,917 minimum offered to those living away from home outside of London, further incentivising the “commuter student” model to save on housing overheads.

Maintaining Excellence Amidst Financial Strain

Despite these economic hurdles, the academic and creative output from local students remains high. The University of Chichester continues to see its cohorts achieve national and international recognition. For instance, Chichester University film students were recently awarded a major accolade at an international festival, proving that the quality of work remains resilient even as students adapt their living arrangements.

To support those facing the most severe financial difficulties, the university has implemented several initiatives. The institution provides specific financial aid, including the ‘Chichester Bursary’ and a dedicated ‘Support Fund’ for students in hardship. Detailed information regarding these resources can be found through the University of Chichester cost of living support portal. These measures are intended to ensure that talented individuals can complete their degrees regardless of whether they are living in student halls or commuting from the family home.
