Dog walker injured after being hit by car

Quick Facts:

  • Who/What: An elderly female pedestrian was seriously injured in a collision with a white Volvo XC40 while walking her dog.
  • Where/When: A22 Hailsham Bypass, East Sussex; Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at approximately 7:30 AM.

Sussex Police have launched a formal appeal for witnesses after a dog walker was injured after being hit by a car on the A22 Hailsham Bypass on Wednesday morning. The incident, which occurred at approximately 7:30 AM on July 29, 2026, resulted in the closure of a major traffic artery for several hours.

Serious Collision Near Eagles Roundabout

According to Sussex Police, the victim—an elderly woman who was walking her dog at the time—was involved in a collision with a white Volvo XC40. The incident took place on the stretch of the A22 between the Eagles Roundabout (A295 South Road) and the Diplocks Way Roundabout in Hailsham.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) and air ambulance crews attended the scene to provide emergency treatment. The pedestrian was subsequently transported to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with what authorities have described as serious injuries. The driver of the Volvo remained at the scene following the collision and was reported to be unharmed.

Road Closures and Forensic Investigation

National Highways and AA Traffic News confirmed that the A22 Hailsham Bypass was closed in both directions for several hours to allow specialist officers to conduct a forensic scene investigation. The closure caused significant disruption to local commuters, though it was deemed necessary to gather evidence for the ongoing investigation, currently designated as ‘Operation Meadows’.

While the focus remains on the safety of pedestrians in the region, including cyclists and walkers who utilize local bypass routes, police are working to establish the full circumstances of the morning’s events.

Status of the Dog and Police Appeal

The woman’s dog, which was with her at the time she was reportedly struck, was rescued from the scene by attending officers. Sussex Police confirmed the animal was taken to a local veterinary clinic for assessment and care while the owner undergoes treatment.

Local dog walkers and residents who may have been in the Hailsham area on Wednesday morning are being urged to come forward. Sussex Police are specifically looking for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or anyone with relevant dashcam footage from the A22 Hailsham Bypass around 7:30 AM.

Information can be reported to Sussex Police online or by calling 101, quoting ‘Operation Meadows’. The investigation remains active, and no charges have been filed at this stage.
