Celebrate your community by embracing an eagerly anticipated annual scarecrow day! That’s the enticing message from organisers of the fun-packed event taking place in Oving on Saturday (May 13).

From home-made scarecrows to face-painting, and from trying archery to maypole dancing, the Oving scarecrows jamboree is dedicated to the ethos of fun for all the family and is “all about community”.

“We want people to get involved in our celebrations, whether by building and displaying a scarecrow on the day or just by coming along to participate in and to support this fantastic event,” says a spokesman.

“This year we are expanding our day – we kick off as usual at noon, but the activities around the village will go on until 5.30pm, so there’s more time for you to get around and see all the scarecrows and attractions.”

The event – the aim of which is to deliver a “great value family day out that is accessible and appealing to our whole community” – has been running since 2008 and came about from an “idea mooted around a kitchen table”.

Since then it has grown to become a red-letter day in the village calendar and is increasingly attracting more and more visitors from outside the area, too.

The scarecrow shindig is made possible thanks to the help of contributions and support of local businesses and as a non-profit charity one of the key aims is to make the event inclusive and affordable.

“We are a charity and we plan our events on a break- even basis, with any surplus from selling teas and raffles being ploughed back in to provide low cost entertainments and attractions,” it is added. “This great day out continues to be fantastic value for money, particularly for families.”
