West Sussex County Council has scheduled a meeting of its Appeals Panel to take place on Thursday, 1 October 2026, at the council’s headquarters in Chichester.

The meeting is set to begin at 10:00 am and will be held at County Hall on West Street. While the panel is an official component of the council’s governance, these sessions typically involve the consideration of sensitive personal information regarding residents and their families.

The primary function of the West Sussex Appeals Panel is to adjudicate on Stage Two appeals. These most commonly relate to home-to-school transport eligibility and college travel assistance. When a parent or carer is dissatisfied with an initial decision regarding transport support, the panel provides a formal secondary review of the case.

Confidentiality and Public Access

Due to the nature of the business being discussed, which frequently involves the personal data and specific circumstances of children and young people, these meetings are generally held in private. Under “Part II” of the standard local government meeting regulations, the press and public are usually excluded to ensure data protection and confidentiality for the appellants.

Specific agenda items are not typically published in advance for this panel because of these confidentiality requirements. The panel’s decisions are based on whether the council’s transport policies have been applied correctly and whether there are exceptional circumstances that warrant a departure from standard policy.

Residents requiring further information on the transport appeals process or seeking to understand the criteria for travel assistance can find guidance on the West Sussex County Council website. Those with scheduled appeals will be contacted directly by the council regarding their specific time slots and the procedures for the hearing.
