UK-Israel relations hit new low over West Bank trade ban and diplomatic closures

Relations between the United Kingdom and Israel have reached a significant low following the announcement of sweeping new sanctions on West Bank settlements and a swift, retaliatory response from the Israeli government.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband delivered an oral statement to the House of Commons on 8 September 2026, outlining a new sanctions regime that includes a formal import ban on goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements. During his address, Mr Miliband described settler violence in the West Bank as “ethnic cleansing” and confirmed that the UK government has adopted an official position that the occupation of the West Bank is “unlawful in its entirety”.

Israel’s retaliatory measures

The Israeli government responded almost immediately to the UK’s announcement. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar ordered the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem, a move that significantly disrupts the UK’s primary diplomatic channel for Palestinian affairs.

Furthermore, Israel has issued entry bans against 12 British nationals. The list of those prohibited from entering the country includes Members of Parliament Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbott, and John McDonnell.

Beyond diplomatic closures and travel bans, the Israeli government announced it would end the presence of British representatives at the International Gaza Support Centre in Kiryat Gat.

Impact on trade and UK consumers

The new UK legislation focuses heavily on the economic viability of settlements. The UK government stated that these powers are intended to respond to a “moral emergency” and protect the possibility of a future two-state solution.

The import ban is expected to affect several specific agricultural products frequently found in UK supermarkets. Items targeted under the new rules include:

  • Medjool dates
  • Avocados
  • Wine produced in settlement areas

Diplomatic fallout

The UK maintains that the measures are a necessary legal and moral response to settlement expansion, while Israel has characterised the sanctions as interference in its internal affairs and its electoral process.

The closure of the East Jerusalem consulate marks the end of a long-standing diplomatic presence in the region, leaving the status of future UK-Palestinian relations and the provision of services to British citizens in those areas uncertain.
