Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ruled out calling an early general election, stating he is “not tempted” to seek a fresh mandate despite improved polling for the Labour Party.
The Prime Minister sought to address speculation that he might go to the country ahead of schedule. Mr Burnham, who took office in July 2026 following the departure of Sir Keir Starmer, confirmed that the next national poll remains scheduled for 2029.
Addressing the rumours of a snap election, Mr Burnham argued that a premature vote would throw the UK into a “backward-looking process” at a time when the government should be focused on its policy agenda. Under current electoral law, the legal deadline for the next general election is August 2029.

The Prime Minister’s comments follow his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on 22 September 2026. Since succeeding Sir Keir Starmer in July 2026, Mr Burnham has focused on his legislative programme without the immediate need for a personal electoral mandate.
According to official reports regarding the government’s timeline, the Prime Minister believes the stability of a full term is necessary to address national challenges.
The Prime Minister’s decision maintains the current political cycle, leaving opposition parties with until 2029 to prepare for the next scheduled trip to the ballot box. For now, the government’s focus remains on its policy agenda and the upcoming legislative session.
