A new initiative designed to define Chichester’s identity and drive regional economic growth was officially unveiled at Pallant House Gallery on Thursday, 17 September 2026.

Known as ‘The Chichester Story’, the project establishes a “place narrative” for the city and surrounding district. The branding and investment campaign is designed to create a unified identity that can be used to attract inward investment, generate new jobs, and provide a marketing boost for the high street, tourism, and leisure sectors.

The launch represents the culmination of work that began following the publication of the Chichester Regeneration Strategy in late 2024. Earlier this year, in January 2026, Chichester District Council launched a community-wide survey to gather views from residents and businesses to ensure the narrative reflected local priorities.

A collaborative regional vision

The project is managed by a multi-sector steering committee involving local government and business leaders. Among those supporting the initiative is Gary Shipton, who in 2026 holds the dual roles of High Sheriff of West Sussex and Editor at Large. Mr Shipton has been a long-standing member of the project’s steering group, advocating for a clearer regional identity to compete for commercial interest.

Organisers say the “shared story” is intended for use by local organisations and small businesses as a consistent promotional toolkit. By providing a unified message about what the Chichester area offers, the campaign aims to raise the region’s profile to external investors who may be considering the area for new offices, retail ventures, or hospitality developments.

The choice of Pallant House Gallery for the unveiling highlights the involvement of major civic institutions. The gallery is a principal partner of the district council and serves as a key cultural anchor for the city’s visitor economy.

While the narrative is now live, its long-term success will be measured by its ability to support the 2024 regeneration goals, specifically in revitalising city centre footfall and securing sustainable employment within the district.
