Katherine Ryan Remark About Victoria Beckham Ruled ‘Gratuitously Offensive’ by BBC

The Executive Complaints Unit (ECU) has upheld complaints regarding a slur directed at Victoria Beckham during a 2025 episode of the long-running satirical series Have I Got News For You. The ruling has resulted in the removal of the offensive sequence from digital archives and the catch-up service.

The incident occurred during a broadcast on November 7, 2025, while guest host Katherine Ryan was discussing a leaked 2013 email attributed to David Beckham. In the email, the former footballer reportedly used a specific high-level slur—the “c-word”—while discussing a potential knighthood. During the segment, Ryan turned the term toward Victoria Beckham, equating her to the same slur.

While the program is known for its irreverent and often biting political satire, the ECU found that this specific remark crossed the line into being “gratuitously offensive.”

The Distinction in Editorial Justification

In its findings, the ECU made a specific distinction between the use of the slur in the context of the news story and its use as a personal insult. The unit noted that referring to the term within the context of David Beckham’s leaked emails carried some editorial justification, as it was a direct reference to a reported news event.

However, the ECU determined that Ryan’s decision to apply the term to Victoria Beckham lacked any similar justification. The ruling stated that the comment was not rooted in a news-related context and served only as a personal attack, making it a breach of editorial standards regarding offensive language.

Removal from iPlayer and Producer Pushback

As a direct consequence of the ruling, the original version of the episode on the iPlayer platform has been replaced. The new version has been edited to excise the remark. The decision marks a rare instance of complaints being upheld against the flagship comedy program, which typically enjoys broad latitude due to its satirical nature.

The ruling has not been met without internal criticism. Jimmy Mulville, the managing director of Hat Trick Productions, which produces Have I Got News For You, publicly challenged the investigation. Mulville described the process and the final ruling as a “total waste of the licence fee,” defending the show’s right to push boundaries in its comedy.

Despite the producer’s objections, editorial oversight remains firm on the matter. The ECU’s decision reinforces a strict boundary between reporting on controversial news events—even those involving offensive language—and the use of such language as a gratuitous punchline directed at public figures. There has been no public comment from Victoria Beckham regarding the ruling.
