John Ternus, who officially succeeded Tim Cook as Apple CEO on September 1, 2026, has marked his first week in the role with the most significant hardware gamble in the company’s recent history. On September 9, Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, signaling a departure from the iterative updates that characterized the latter half of the Cook era.
The iPhone Duo represents the first major design overhaul of the iPhone since the introduction of the all-screen iPhone X in 2017, and arguably the most radical shift since the original 2007 model. Positioned as a ultra-premium productivity device, the Duo carries a starting price of $1,999 for the 256GB model, with high-capacity versions expected to reach near $3,000.

Hardware Specifications and Design
The device features a dual-display architecture consisting of a 5.4-inch external screen and a 7.6-inch internal folding display. To address common durability concerns associated with foldables, Apple is utilizing a grade 5 titanium frame. The Duo’s outer 5.4-inch display allows it to function as a traditional smartphone when closed.
Under the hood, the iPhone Duo is powered by the new A20 Pro chip. According to The Guardian, this launch serves as Ternus’s public debut as CEO, effectively tethering his early legacy to the success of a category that Samsung has dominated for seven years.
The iPhone Duo will reportedly support the USB-C Apple Pencil, a move aimed at positioning the device as a hybrid between a phone and an iPad Mini for creative professionals and enterprise users.
Market Positioning and Availability
By entering the foldable market at a $1,999 price point, Apple is targeting the top tier of the smartphone market, even as the category as a whole faces questions regarding mass-market appeal. The “Duo” branding suggests Apple sees this not just as a larger phone, but as a dual-purpose machine intended to condense the functionality of multiple devices into one.
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are scheduled to open on Friday, October 16, 2026. The device will be available in retail stores and begin shipping to customers on October 23. While the industry has long anticipated an Apple foldable, the timing of the release—coinciding exactly with a leadership transition—places immense pressure on the new administration to prove that Apple can still define new hardware categories rather than just refining existing ones.
