Passengers across Sussex face several more weeks of reduced services and speed restrictions following a high-level meeting between rail bosses and Eastbourne MP Josh Babarinde.
Mr Babarinde met with executives from Network Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) on 23 September 2026 to address what he described as “unacceptable” disruption following the train derailment near Lewes in August.
The meeting confirmed that full service restoration and the lifting of infrastructure repairs are not expected until at least the week commencing 12 October 2026. Until then, speed restrictions will remain in place across sections of the network, affecting Southern Rail services that connect key hubs across the county.
Summer Heat Caused Track Warping
The disruption stems from a significant incident on 13 August 2026, when the 14:24 service from London Victoria to Eastbourne (1F34) derailed at approximately 15:54. The derailment resulted in 30 people being injured, 20 of whom required hospital treatment.
According to rail officials, the 2026 summer was the hottest and driest on record. This extreme weather caused clay soil beneath the tracks to shrink and warp, leading to what investigators have termed “soil deficit.”
