Quick Facts:

  • Who/What: English Heritage has introduced a ‘replacement policy’ for dropped ice creams called ‘Ice-cream splat insurance’.
  • Where/When: Valid at 18 historic sites from 13 August to 31 August 2026, during standard kiosk hours (10:00–17:00).

English Heritage has announced a new promotional scheme aimed at protecting summer treats from accidental tumbles. Dubbed ‘Ice-cream splat insurance’, the initiative offers visitors a one-time free replacement if their ice cream ends up on the floor rather than in their mouths.

The scheme, which runs from 13 August until 31 August 2026, is available at 18 selected historic sites across the country. For residents in the South East, the policy will be active at popular regional landmarks including Battle Abbey in East Sussex, Dover Castle in Kent, and both Osborne and Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight.

While the heat remains a factor for many visiting the region’s heritage sites—particularly following how the latest heatwave impacts the South East & Chichester—the charity hope this move will take the stress out of a seaside or countryside day out.

How the replacement scheme works

To claim a replacement, English Heritage stated that customers must return the dropped cone or cup to the original point of purchase as proof of the “splat”. The offer is strictly limited to one-time replacements of Northern Bloc soft scoop ice cream served in a cone or cup.

Organisers have clarified that the policy applies to both user error and accidental drops caused by third parties, such as interference from seagulls or other local wildlife. However, the scheme is restricted to Northern Bloc soft scoop products; all pre-packaged ice creams, lollies, and non-Northern Bloc branded treats are excluded from the replacement offer.

It is important to note that while the charity uses the term ‘insurance’ as a marketing metaphor, this is a promotional replacement policy and not a financial insurance product regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Operating hours and site access

The replacement policy is available during the standard operating hours of the individual ice cream kiosks at each of the 18 sites. Most participating kiosks operate between 10:00 and 17:00, though visitors are advised that some outlets may close 30 minutes prior to the main site closure.

Addressing British politeness

The initiative follows research commissioned by English Heritage which suggests that the British public is often too reserved to ask for help when a snack disaster strikes. According to the poll, 68% of British people feel too polite to ask for a replacement after accidentally dropping their ice cream.

Daisy Rowe, Head of Commercial Development at English Heritage, indicated that the scheme is designed to ensure that a momentary lapse in concentration does not ruin a visitor’s experience at the charity’s historic locations.

Participating historic sites

The ‘Ice-cream splat insurance’ is available at the following 18 locations (Standard Kiosk Hours: 10:00–17:00):

  • Battle Abbey (1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield), East Sussex
  • Dover Castle, Kent
  • Osborne, Isle of Wight
  • Carisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight
  • Stonehenge, Wiltshire
  • Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, Northumberland
  • Audley End House and Gardens, Essex
  • Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire
  • Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, South Yorkshire
  • Eltham Palace and Gardens, Greenwich
  • Framlingham Castle, Suffolk
  • Goodrich Castle, Herefordshire
  • Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden, Warwickshire
  • Pendennis Castle, Cornwall
  • Scarborough Castle, North Yorkshire
  • Stokesay Castle, Shropshire
  • Tintagel Castle, Cornwall
  • Wrest Park, Bedfordshire

Local residents planning a trip to East Sussex should also remain aware of potential travel updates, such as the severe train disruption following landslip reported near Eastbourne, which may affect routes to Battle Abbey.

The scheme will remain in place until the end of August, providing a safety net for families and tourists visiting the charity’s most iconic English landmarks during the peak of the summer holidays.
