Eight winners from across Sussex and Surrey have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to their communities at the annual ‘Make a Difference’ Awards.
The ceremony, held in Brighton during September, celebrated individuals and organisations that have gone “above and beyond” to support others. The awards are part of a national initiative held across local radio stations in England, highlighting the efforts of unsung heroes who often work behind the scenes to improve the lives of those around them.
The 2026 finalists were selected from hundreds of nominations submitted by members of the public earlier this year. The awards cycle typically begins in the spring, allowing residents to put forward neighbours, volunteers, and community leaders for consideration.
Eight Categories of Community Service
The awards are divided into eight distinct categories, each reflecting different ways in which people contribute to their local area. This year’s honours were presented for:
- Volunteer: Awarded to an individual who gives up their time to help an organisation or cause.
- Community Group: Recognising a group that has made a significant impact on its local area.
- Fundraiser: For individuals who have gone to great lengths to raise money for charity.
- Carer: To someone who improves the life of another through their care and dedication.
- Great Neighbour: Awarded to those who help out in their local street or housing estate.
- Bravery: For someone who has shown outstanding courage.
- Green Award: Recognising efforts to improve the local environment or tackle climate issues.
- Together Award: For those who have worked to bring diverse communities together.
The “Together Award” specifically highlights projects that build bridges between different groups, while the “Green Award” honours practical environmental action within the Sussex and Surrey region.
The ‘Make a Difference’ programme was established as a way to provide a platform for local stories of kindness and resilience. Similar ceremonies have taken place across the country to mark local achievements, with eight winners also recognised in other regions for their dedication to public service through the same scheme.
While the 2026 awards have now concluded, the initiative remains an annual fixture. Nominations for the next cycle are expected to open in early 2027, providing another opportunity for residents to highlight those making a positive impact in their towns and villages.
