A brother’s 100km tribute walk is set to reach its finish line in Arundel this weekend, as Sam Herschell completes an emotional journey in memory of his sibling.
Mr Herschell is participating in the South Coast Ultra Challenge over the weekend of 5-6 September 2026. The route takes participants from Eastbourne across the South Downs, concluding in the historic town of Arundel. He is undertaking the challenge to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK, a cause close to his family following the death of his brother, Tom.
Tom Herschell passed away on 25 November 2002, aged just 16, due to complications from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He had been diagnosed with the muscle-wasting condition at the age of two. Reflecting on the upcoming trek, Sam described his late brother as the “angel on my shoulder” who will help him navigate the gruelling 100km distance.
The 100km Route to Arundel
The South Coast Ultra Challenge is a significant endurance event following the South Downs Way. The 100km continuous path requires walkers and runners to traverse some of the region’s most demanding terrain, including Beachy Head, the Seven Sisters, Brighton, and Devil’s Dyke.
The journey finishes in Arundel, marking the culmination of months of preparation for Mr Herschell. The family has long worked to keep Tom’s memory alive; following his passing, the Thomas Herschell Sporting Excellence Award was established at Sunbury Manor School to honour his legacy.
Sam’s fundraising efforts are directed towards Muscular Dystrophy UK.
