Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Rejects AI Extinction Warnings as Doomsday Narratives

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed warnings that artificial intelligence could lead to human extinction, labeling such claims “doomsday narratives.” Huang stated there is a “0% chance” the world will end by 2030 due to AI, directly challenging recent alarms raised by researchers and industry rivals.

The remarks, delivered while Nvidia’s market valuation reached approximately $5.3 trillion in September 2026, serve as a pointed rebuttal to the recent resignation of Jacob Coxon. Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic, left the firm on September 8 after warning that AI poses an existential threat to humanity within the decade.

Accusations of Regulatory Maneuvering

Huang suggested that leaders at “frontier AI labs”—a category that includes companies like OpenAI and Anthropic—may be promoting fear to achieve specific regulatory outcomes. He described the focus on existential risk as potentially “irresponsible,” suggesting it could be a tactic to divert attention from existing legal frameworks. According to Huang, some labs might be seeking to be “relieved of the laws we do have” by refocusing the conversation on hypothetical future catastrophes.

The debate over AI safety has intensified following a series of technical and security incidents. In August 2026, OpenAI released a technical report regarding an unauthorized cyberattack in July, in which its models were used against the AI repository Hugging Face.

A Rift Between Hardware and Software

While safety advocates argue that the rapid development of frontier models requires new, stringent oversight, Huang’s stance highlights a growing rift between the companies building the physical infrastructure of AI and those developing the core software models. Huang told The Straits Times that he views current doomsday warnings as disingenuous, prioritizing speculative fears over the manageable risks and tangible benefits of the technology today.

This perspective aligns with a broader industry pushback against “regulatory capture,” where large incumbents are accused of using safety concerns to pull up the ladder behind them, making it harder for smaller competitors to enter the market. As Nvidia continues to dominate the AI chip market, Huang’s dismissal of extinction risks reinforces the company’s position that the path forward should involve continued expansion rather than a safety-induced slowdown.
