The High Sheriff of West Sussex has praised the “world-class” facilities at Mount Noddy Animal Centre following a formal visit to the Eartham-based rescue site this month.

Gary Shipton, who began his term as High Sheriff in March 2026, toured the centre in September to inspect the long-term impact of a multi-million pound redevelopment completed four years ago. The project, funded largely by a significant £4 million legacy, transformed the site into one of the most advanced animal welfare hubs in the region.

The site features 27 purpose-built dog kennels and 47 cat pens designed to modern welfare standards.

Located on Blackmill Lane, Eartham, just outside Chichester, Mount Noddy serves as the primary rescue and rehoming centre for the RSPCA Sussex West Branch. Since the state-of-the-art facility reopened its doors in April 2022, it has successfully rehomed hundreds of animals across the county.

Advanced facilities for Chichester’s animals

The redevelopment provided the centre with 27 purpose-built dog kennels and 47 cat pens, designed to meet the highest modern welfare standards. The site also features specialised maternity units for mothers and their litters, ensuring a quiet and safe environment for the most vulnerable residents.

Beyond standard housing, the centre offers a canine hydrotherapy treadmill to assist with rehabilitation and ‘Noddy Life Skills’ one-to-one training sessions to help prepare dogs for their new homes. There is also an on-site pet shop which helps generate vital funds for the charity’s work.

The RSPCA Sussex West Branch is an independent charity. While it is affiliated with the national RSPCA, it is entirely self-funded and receives no government grants or central funding for its daily operations. It currently costs approximately £1.17 million per year to keep the centre running.

According to the branch, public donations and legacies are the lifeblood of the organisation, allowing them to provide veterinary care, food, and shelter for animals that have often been victims of cruelty or neglect.

Information for visitors and adopters

While the centre is typically open from 10am to 4pm daily, staff advise that those looking to adopt should contact the team before travelling. The rehoming process begins with an initial enquiry to ensure pets are matched with the right owners, and viewings are usually arranged by appointment.

The High Sheriff’s visit serves as a reminder of the significant role the centre plays in the Chichester community. As the facility enters its fifth year since the rebuild, the focus remains on sustaining the high costs of care through local fundraising and volunteer support.
