Technical Service Announcement: Rail lines blocked between Oxted and Uckfield
Commuters and rail passengers across East Sussex and Surrey are advised of significant train service disruption following track defects discovered near Edenbridge Town. Southern Railway has confirmed that all lines between Oxted and Uckfield are currently blocked while Network Rail engineers attend the site to carry out urgent repairs.
- Status: Technical service disruption due to urgent track defect.
- Timeline: Closure expected until at least 08:00 on Tuesday, 18 August 2026.
- Note: All reopening times are estimated and subject to change by Network Rail engineers.
The disruption, which affects stations including Buxted, Crowborough, Eridge, Ashurst, Cowden, and Hever, is expected to last throughout the Monday evening peak and into Tuesday morning. According to Southern Railway, the line is expected until at least 08:00 on Tuesday, 18 August, though this remains an estimated reopening time subject to the progress of on-site repairs by Network Rail engineers.
Replacement transport and Monday peak frequency
To mitigate the impact on local travellers, a rail replacement bus service has been deployed. To support Monday morning commuters, Southern has confirmed that bus frequency will be increased during peak hours, with additional vehicles operating to manage passenger volumes. Outside of peak times, an hourly service will operate between Oxted, Crowborough, and Uckfield.
Passengers using minor stations should note the following specific boarding points:
- Hever: Rail replacement buses will stop at the station approach road, near the station entrance.
- Ashurst: Buses will pick up and drop off at the station forecourt on Station Road.
Southern has also arranged for ticket acceptance on Southeastern services between Hastings and London, as well as on local bus routes 29, 29B, and 29X. This incident follows previous instances of severe train disruption following landslip and infrastructure issues in the region.
Delay Repay and Compensation
Passengers are advised that the rail replacement bus route is estimated to add approximately 60 minutes to standard journey times. Under the ‘Delay Repay’ scheme, any passenger delayed by 15 minutes or more compared to their scheduled train time is eligible for compensation. Given the 60-minute extension for bus users, most passengers on this route will be entitled to a minimum of 50% or 100% of the cost of that journey leg, depending on the final duration of the delay. Claims can be submitted via the Southern Railway website with a photograph of the original ticket or a scan of a Smartcard.
Network Rail response
Network Rail engineers are currently on-site near Edenbridge Town assessing the severity of the track defect. While the nature of the fault has been described as “urgent,” officials have not yet released specific details regarding the technical cause. A spokesperson for Southern Railway stated that the lines will only be reopened once the track has been declared safe for operation. Passengers are urged to check the latest travel information before starting their journeys on Tuesday, as the estimated reopening may be adjusted based on the complexity of the engineering work required.
For those travelling from other parts of the county, it may also be worth reviewing updates regarding planning for derailed train recovery in other areas, which has previously impacted regional scheduling.
Guidance for local residents
Residents in Uckfield and Crowborough who rely on the Oxted line for access to London Bridge are encouraged to use the enhanced replacement bus services or seek alternative transport via the Brighton Main Line where possible. Southern has apologised for the inconvenience caused by this technical service disruption and continues to provide updates via digital channels.
