  • A Global Legacy: Yayoi Kusama passed away at age 97 on August 14, 2026, following a period of declining health.
  • Artistic Vision: Famous for her immersive polka dots and Infinity Mirror Rooms, she remained the world’s top-selling contemporary artist through 2023.

The Passing of Yayoi Kusama

The art world is reflecting on the extraordinary life of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who died on August 14, 2026. She was 97. Her passing, confirmed by Yayoi Kusama Inc. on August 27, occurred in a Tokyo hospital due to multiple organ failure.

Born in Matsumoto in 1929, Kusama’s creative output was inseparable from her mental health journey. From a young age, she experienced vivid hallucinations—geometric patterns and nets that would eventually define her career. After initially studying the nihonga style at the Kyoto City University of Arts in 1948, she sought the creative freedom of the West.

Defining the Avant-Garde

Kusama’s 1958 move to New York City placed her at the center of the pop art and minimalist movements. She became a fixture of the 1960s underground scene, famous for her “happenings” where participants were transformed into living canvases of polka dots. Her global stature was cemented in 1993 when she represented Japan at the Venice Biennale, a milestone that brought her unique vision to a mainstream audience.

For nearly fifty years, Kusama lived voluntarily at the Seiwa Hospital for the Mentally Ill in Tokyo, using her art as a therapeutic tool. This commitment to mental wellbeing through creative expression finds parallels in contemporary local projects, such as the new Chichester and Sussex community mental health hubs designed to support residents through accessible care.

Commercial Success and Cultural Impact

In her final decades, Kusama’s market value soared. In 2023, she was the highest-selling contemporary artist globally, with auction sales exceeding $80 million. This commercial dominance was punctuated by her high-profile collaborations with Louis Vuitton, which introduced her aesthetic to the worlds of high fashion and street style.

Her ability to maintain such immense cultural relevance for nearly a century is a feat shared by few, drawing comparisons to Dolly Parton’s legacy of literacy and culture. Kusama’s work is preserved for future generations at the Yayoi Kusama Museum in Tokyo, which remains a pilgrimage site for fans of her “Infinity Mirror Rooms.”

Her story of resilience continues to inspire the next generation of creatives, much like the path of emerging artist Charlotte as she begins her residency. As noted in her obituary, Kusama leaves behind a landscape of contemporary art that is forever changed by her persistence and her dots.
