Michael Kiwanuka has revealed he is currently recovering from a stroke suffered several months ago, a health crisis that the singer-songwriter described as a “quite severe” brain injury. On September 23, 2026, the 39-year-old musician shared the update, clarifying the circumstances behind his prolonged absence from the stage and his recent string of tour cancellations.

The stroke was caused by a brain bleed, or hemorrhage, which was triggered by high blood pressure. Kiwanuka noted that the recovery process involves significant rehabilitation, and while he is making progress, he remains unsure of when he will be physically able to return to live performances.

The musician's health emergency was caused by a brain bleed linked to high blood pressure.

The revelation provides clinical context for the mysterious health issues that led Kiwanuka to withdraw from several high-profile appearances over the last year. These included unexplained cancellations of scheduled US tour dates supporting Mumford & Sons in early 2026.

By disclosing the specific cause, Kiwanuka indicated a desire to raise awareness about high blood pressure, often referred to as a silent killer because it can lead to severe cardiovascular and neurological events in relatively young adults without prior warning.

Alongside the sobering health news, Kiwanuka announced the upcoming release of a new studio album titled Fudge. This new body of work follows his 2024 album Small Changes, marking a productive creative period for the artist despite the physical challenges he now faces.

The announcement was met with an immediate wave of support from the music community. Peers including singer Olivia Dean and broadcaster Lauren Laverne were among those sending messages of encouragement as Kiwanuka continues his rehabilitation. While the release of Fudge maintains his connection to listeners, the artist emphasized that his immediate focus remains on the “long, tough journey” of his medical recovery.
