Dame Esther Rantzen, the pioneering broadcaster and social reformer who transformed British consumer rights and child protection, has died at the age of 86. Her family confirmed her passing in a statement released by her daughter, Rebecca Wilcox, following Rantzen’s public battle with stage 4 lung cancer.

Rantzen’s career spanned more than five decades, during which she transitioned from a groundbreaking television presenter into one of the country’s most effective campaigners. She is perhaps best known as the face of the consumer protection program That’s Life!, which she hosted for 21 years between 1973 and 1994. At its peak, the show attracted up to 20 million viewers, using a unique blend of humor, investigative journalism, and public advocacy to force changes in corporate behavior and national legislation.

A Legacy of Protection: Childline and The Silver Line

While That’s Life! made her a household name, Rantzen’s most enduring impact came through her philanthropic work. In 1986, following a segment on the show about child abuse, she founded Childline, the UK’s first 24-hour counseling service for children and young people. The organization began as a small operation in a single room and has since grown into a national institution.

The NSPCC, which now manages the service, credited Rantzen with fundamentally changing how society listens to and protects vulnerable children. Her ability to use her media platform to highlight systemic failures led to significant shifts in child protection laws and public awareness. Later in 2013, she turned her attention to the elderly, founding The Silver Line to provide support and companionship to older people experiencing isolation and loneliness.

The Final Campaign for Assisted Dying

In her final years, Rantzen applied her campaigning experience to her own terminal illness. After being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2023, she became a prominent voice in the debate over the legalization of assisted dying in the UK. She argued that individuals with terminal illnesses should have the right to choose the timing and manner of their death, citing her own desire for a “painless and dignified” end.

In December 2023, Rantzen confirmed she had joined the Swiss assisted dying clinic Dignitas. She used her remaining months to lobby Parliament, calling for a free vote on the issue and challenging what she described as “cruel” current legislation. Her advocacy brought renewed national attention to the Assisted Dying Bill, turning her personal health struggle into a final legislative stand.

Rantzen’s work earned her numerous accolades, including being made a Dame in 2015 for services to children and older people. She is survived by her three children and her grandchildren. Her family has stated that her legacy will live on through the millions of people helped by the charities she founded and the consumer standards she helped establish.
