British Museum to provide audio-described tours for Bayeux Tapestry following legal challenge

The British Museum has committed to providing in-person audio-described tours for its landmark Bayeux Tapestry exhibition, reversing an earlier policy that restricted guided access for visitors with visual impairments. The museum confirmed the shift following a legal challenge alleging the institution had breached the Equality Act.

The legal action was initiated by Dr. Yusuf Ali Osman, a blind man from Croydon, who was represented by the law firm Leigh Day. Dr. Osman argued that the absence of programmed tours prevented visually impaired visitors from fully experiencing the 70-meter-long masterpiece, which is currently on loan from France until July 11, 2027. Under the new agreement, the museum will now offer dedicated in-person tours.

Conservation and Accessibility Challenges

The museum initially restricted programmed tours in the Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery, citing the need to protect the 11th-century artifact. Conservators had raised concerns regarding excessive light exposure and the logistics of managing crowds around the delicate embroidery. Museum officials previously stated they would prioritize self-guided visits to balance capacity and preservation requirements.

However, the settlement establishes that the museum will accommodate “dedicated” in-person audio-described sessions. This adjustment ensures that the exhibition, which opened on September 10, 2026, meets the requirements for equal access while maintaining the strict environmental controls necessary for the tapestry’s safety.

Exhibition Details and Ticket Information

The Bayeux Tapestry is currently being displayed flat for the first time in its history. This layout is designed to allow visitors a closer inspection of the intricate embroidery and to facilitate digital enhancements that provide context for the historical narrative of the Norman Conquest. Measuring roughly 70 meters in length, the tapestry is on loan to the British Museum from France until July 11, 2027.

Public interest in the exhibition remains high, with all tickets for the remainder of 2026 currently sold out. The British Museum has announced that the next batch of tickets will be released on October 21, 2026. Visitors requiring the newly announced audio-described tours are advised to monitor the museum’s booking portal for specific dates and availability for the 2027 sessions.
