Lord Tom Watson, the former deputy leader of the Labour Party, has been appointed as Senior Vice President for UK operations at Palantir, the US-based data analytics firm. The appointment, announced on Friday 18 September 2026, comes as the company faces increased scrutiny over its multi-million pound contracts with the NHS and other public sector bodies.
Lord Watson has taken a formal leave of absence from the House of Lords and relinquished his parliamentary pass to take up the executive role. While he has been an informal advisor to the firm since 2024, this move represents a significant shift into a formal leadership position within the company’s British division.
The appointment is being viewed as a strategic move by Palantir ahead of a critical juncture in its relationship with the UK government. The company currently holds a £330 million contract to deliver the NHS Federated Data Platform (FDP), a system designed to help the health service manage waiting lists and streamline hospital discharge procedures. A key break clause in this contract is scheduled for February 2027, which allows the government to evaluate the platform’s performance and determine its future.
The NHS Federated Data Platform and public scrutiny
The NHS FDP is currently being rolled out across various health trusts. While supporters of the technology, including Lord Watson, argue that it is essential for modernising the health service, the platform has faced criticism from privacy campaigners and some political figures. Lord Watson stated that part of his new role would be to “correct false information” about the company and ensure that privacy and security remain “at the heart of engineering.”
According to The Guardian, the move has already sparked debate regarding the “revolving door” between high-level politics and corporate lobbying. Green Party MP Sian Berry described the appointment as “corrosive,” suggesting it raises questions about the influence of former ministers and senior politicians on government procurement processes.
