The Green Party is facing national scrutiny following disclosures that its co-deputy leader, Mothin Ali, is a director of a property company that owns rental homes, despite the party’s official policy seeking to end private landlordism.
Mr Ali, the co-deputy leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, is the sole director of MA Holdings, a private company incorporated in December 2021. Through this company, he owns two properties in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
The disclosure comes at a sensitive time for the party, which formally adopted a policy at its October 2025 conference calling for the “effective abolition of private landlordism.” The Green Party platform has frequently championed stricter rent controls and the end of “no-fault” evictions, positioning itself as a primary opponent of the current rental market structure.
Records show that MA Holdings purchased a three-bedroom former council house in the Gipton area of Leeds for £165,000 in June 2022. A second property was acquired by the company in March 2025 for £157,000.
While the party maintains its stance on housing reform, it has issued a statement defending Mr Ali’s position. A spokesperson stated that his involvement with the properties is linked to caring responsibilities for vulnerable close family members and that he does not personally profit from the rental arrangements.
According to a report by Property Industry Eye, the party’s 2025 conference vote to move toward the “effective abolition” of the sector has highlighted potential contradictions for representatives with personal property interests.
Financial filings for MA Holdings indicate that the company’s bank balance rose from approximately £7,000 in 2023 to £22,341 in 2024. Despite these figures, the Green Party has reiterated that the arrangements are part of a private family caring structure rather than a commercial venture for personal gain.
The timing of the disclosure coincides with a period of increased national visibility for the Green Party leadership.
Mr Ali has not publicly disclosed the exact amount of rent charged for the properties, and specific details regarding the family caring arrangements have been withheld to protect the privacy of the individuals involved. No formal internal review into the property holdings has been announced by the party following the disclosure.
