Welsh actor Matthew Rhys achieved a milestone in television history on September 14, 2026, becoming the first performer to win two lead acting trophies in a single night at the Primetime Emmy Awards. During the 78th annual ceremony held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Rhys secured wins in both the comedy and limited series categories.

Rhys took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in the Apple TV+ series Widow’s Bay, followed by a win for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s The Beast in Me. This double victory marks the first time any actor has claimed two lead performance prizes during the same Emmy broadcast.

Completing the Emmy Trifecta

Beyond the single-night record, the wins established Rhys as the first male performer to complete what is often called the “genre trifecta” of lead acting. By adding comedy and limited series trophies to his collection, he has now won lead actor awards across all three primary television genres.

Rhys previously won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2018 for his portrayal of Soviet spy Philip Jennings in The Americans. This career sweep places him in rare company; he joins Barbara Stanwyck as one of only two actors in history to achieve lead wins in drama, comedy, and limited series categories.

The 2026 ceremony, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, saw Rhys secure his historic wins.

Contrasting Performances

The two roles that propelled Rhys to his historic night showcased his range across vastly different tones. In the horror-comedy Widow’s Bay, Rhys plays Tom Loftis, the eccentric mayor of a cursed island town in New England. The series was a major force at the awards, setting a record for the most comedy wins in a single year with 14 total trophies.

In contrast, his performance in The Beast in Me returned him to the realm of the psychological thriller. Starring alongside Claire Danes, Rhys portrayed Nile Jarvis, a real estate heir and the subject of a murder investigation.

During his acceptance speeches, Rhys remained focused on his roots, dedicating the historic achievement to his home country. He described Wales as a “small but mighty nation,” acknowledging the support he has received throughout a career that has spanned Welsh-language productions, prestige cable dramas, and now record-breaking streaming hits.
