A man already facing a murder charge following the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe has been charged with terrorism offences involving an alleged plot to target Nigel Farage.

Joshua Kerry, 28, of Byrley Road, Rotherham, has been charged with one count of preparation of terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. The charge relates to activity alleged to have taken place between 31 May 2024 and 8 July 2026.

The Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charge following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing. Authorities stated the alleged preparation was intended to target the Reform UK leader, Nigel Farage.

Mr Kerry was previously charged in July 2026 with the murder of Ann Widdecombe. The 78-year-old former Conservative minister and Brexit Party MEP was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on 9 July 2026. It is alleged she was struck multiple times with a hammer.

While initial police statements following the death of Ms Widdecombe suggested no immediate link to a political motive, the discovery of further evidence led to a counter-terrorism inquiry.

National security review

The development has prompted a fresh review of the security measures provided to public figures. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said that any attack on those in public life was “an attack on all,” noting that the government is closely monitoring the safety of MPs and political candidates.

In a related development, police confirmed they have reopened a separate inquiry into a security incident at Mr Farage’s home in south London, which dates back to April 2025. Investigators are working to establish whether there are any links between that incident and the current charges against Mr Kerry.

Mr Kerry is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 7 October 2026. He remains in custody following his initial appearance in connection with the murder charge.

Members of the public have been reminded that criminal proceedings are active and that the suspect has the right to a fair trial. Legal experts note that the “preparation of terrorist acts” charge can cover a wide range of activities, including conducting reconnaissance, purchasing equipment, or researching potential targets with the intent to commit or assist in an act of terrorism.
