A devastating fire at an unlicensed care home in southern Chile has claimed the lives of 16 elderly residents and prompted a nationwide review of safety standards.
The blaze broke out at the “El Edén” long-term care facility in Villa Comuy, within the Pitrufquén commune of the Araucanía region, at approximately 10:30 PM local time on Friday, 11 September. Emergency services worked through the night, eventually extinguishing the fire on Saturday morning.
Of the 26 residents present in the building at the time of the outbreak, 10 survived and were evacuated for medical assessment. They were transferred to a local hospital for evaluation, while a nearby high school in Pitrufquén was established as a temporary shelter for those affected.
Regulatory failures and investigation
Investigations into the tragedy have revealed that the facility was operating without the required regulatory permits. Official records indicate that El Edén had faced administrative proceedings and fines for various rule violations since 2019, yet it remained in operation.
The Prosecutor’s Office, led by Jorge Granada, is currently investigating both the physical cause of the fire and the facility’s legal standing. The inquiry is expected to examine why an unlicensed home with a history of safety concerns was permitted to continue housing vulnerable residents.
Chilean President José Antonio Kast has responded to the disaster by ordering an urgent national review of all elderly care facilities. According to reporting from BioBioChile, the President has demanded an inspection of conditions and oversight across the country to identify other unauthorised homes.
The identities of the 16 victims have not yet been released to the public as the process of formal identification and notification of families continues.
