Quick Facts:

  • The Event: Southern Railway services are suspended due to a confirmed infrastructure failure following a reported landslip between Glynde and Berwick.
  • Impact: The line to Eastbourne is blocked during the Airbourne international airshow (15-18 August 2024).
  • Alternative: Services from London Victoria to Eastbourne via Polegate remain operational but are experiencing significant congestion.

Rail passengers travelling through East Sussex face severe disruption following a reported landslip between Glynde and Berwick. The infrastructure failure has resulted in the total closure of the line heading towards Eastbourne, causing significant travel complications for thousands of residents and visitors.

Southern Railway confirmed that the line was blocked early this morning. The disruption coincides with the first day of Eastbourne Airbourne, a major international airshow expected to attract large crowds between Thursday, 15 August and Sunday, 18 August. Network Rail engineers are currently on-site, though a definitive timeline for reopening remains unavailable until engineers provide a full structural assessment of the site.

Travel advice for Airbourne visitors

National Rail Enquiries and Southern Railway have issued an urgent travel advisory, suggesting that passengers should not travel on affected routes unless absolutely necessary. Those intending to visit the airshow have been advised alternative routes to reach the coastal town, as the blockage impacts the primary artery from Lewes.

The alternative route from London Victoria to Eastbourne via Polegate is currently open; however, passengers should expect heavy loading and potential delays as traffic is diverted. Travel via Brighton is also impacted by the line closure east of Lewes.

Infrastructure and Safety Assessment

A spokesperson for Southern Railway stated that Network Rail teams are working to determine the volume of debris. Site clearance and safety checks are estimated to take at least 24 hours, pending the results of the initial structural assessment. The reported landslip highlights the ongoing vulnerability of local infrastructure to environmental shifts, similar to the disruptions seen during extreme weather impacts across the South East earlier this year.

Eastbourne Borough Council, the organisers of Airbourne, are encouraging visitors to check the latest travel updates before starting their journey. The council noted that while the airshow continues as planned, the reduction in rail capacity is expected to increase congestion on the A27 and surrounding local roads.

Current service status and replacement transport

According to the latest operational updates, the following measures are in effect:

  • Rail Replacement Buses: A shuttle service is operating every 20 to 30 minutes between Lewes, Glynde, Berwick, Polegate, and Eastbourne. Pickup points are located at the designated bus stop areas on each station’s forecourt.
  • Ticket Acceptance: Tickets are being accepted at no extra cost on Brighton & Hove bus routes 12, 12A, and 12X (between Brighton, Seaford, and Eastbourne), as well as routes 28 and 29 (between Brighton, Lewes, and Uckfield).
  • Service Revision: Trains that usually run between Ore/Eastbourne and London Victoria/Brighton will be terminated at or started from Lewes or Polegate where possible.

Until Network Rail engineers provide a full structural assessment and confirm the site is stabilized, the line will remain closed. Passengers are advised to monitor live departure boards and Southern Railway’s social media channels for real-time updates on the recovery operation.
