News presenter Maryam Moshiri has revealed she is living with a rare and incurable form of blood cancer, following a diagnosis in late 2024.
The 49-year-old newsreader has been diagnosed with Polycythaemia vera (PV), a condition that causes the bone marrow to overproduce red blood cells.
Moshiri discovered the condition in November 2024 after undergoing routine blood tests related to the menopause. While the typical age for a PV diagnosis is around 60, the presenter is significantly younger than many others living with the condition.
What is Polycythaemia vera?
Polycythaemia vera is a rare and incurable form of blood cancer.
According to Blood Cancer UK, approximately 15,000 people across the country are currently living with PV.
Despite the diagnosis and ongoing treatment, Moshiri has continued to work full-time. This has included anchoring coverage of major global developments and working 14-hour shifts during high-pressure news cycles.
Raising awareness of symptoms
By sharing her story, Moshiri is supporting Blood Cancer UK’s “Here for This” campaign, which aims to improve early diagnosis and public understanding of the disease.
