The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony takes place tonight, Monday, September 14, 2026, live from the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The telecast, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, is scheduled to air on NBC and stream on Peacock starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
Heading into the main event, the medical drama The Pitt leads the field with a total of 25 nominations. It faces stiff competition from the second season of Beef, which has transitioned into an anthology format. While the first season focused on the conflict between characters played by Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, the new installment features a rivalry between characters portrayed by Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan, both of whom are nominated in the lead acting categories for a limited or anthology series.
According to the Television Academy, Beef earned 16 total nominations for this cycle. The series has already secured early momentum following the Creative Arts Emmy Awards held on September 5 and 6, where it picked up three wins for costume design, sound editing, and sound mixing. Other early winners from the Creative Arts ceremonies include Widow’s Bay, which took home eight trophies, and a posthumous honor for the late Rob Reiner.
The Technical Ineligibility of ‘Heated Rivalry’
One of the most discussed absences from tonight’s ceremony is the breakout hockey drama Heated Rivalry. Despite being one of the most-streamed programs of the year, the show did not receive any nominations, a fact that stems from technical eligibility requirements rather than a lack of critical acclaim.
The Primetime Emmy Awards maintain strict rules regarding U.S. co-production status. Heated Rivalry was fully financed by the Canadian production company Crave/Bell Media. While the series eventually found a home in the United States on HBO Max, the streaming platform acquired the distribution rights only after production was entirely complete. Because there was no U.S. co-production partner involved at the start of development, the show remains ineligible for domestic Emmy consideration.
Despite the show’s exclusion, Heated Rivalry lead star Connor Storrie will still be in attendance as an Emmy nominee. Storrie earned a nod for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series following his guest-hosting stint on Saturday Night Live.
As tonight’s winners are announced, the Los Angeles Times and other major outlets will track the results live to see if The Pitt can maintain its numerical advantage or if Beef will dominate the limited series categories as its predecessor did in years prior.
