A University of Chichester student has received a prestigious accolade for his contribution to the IT industry at a national awards ceremony in London.

James Weston, an undergraduate from the BSc (Hons) IT Management for Business at Chichester, said it felt great and very humbling to receive the prize.

He added: “I have managed by sheer determination and also by being proactive in managing my conditions and seeking help when required.

“The university has helped me to develop academically, personally, and professionally through my course which is a blend of IT, management, and business that mixes academia with real-world application.”

The 33-year-old student was honored by the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists (WCIT) and was presented with a silver award for his academic achievements.

He also received high praise from the judges for his determination and hard work despite challenging mental health.

Professor Dave Cooper from the university’s business school nominated James for the award.

He said: “James has shown strong character and attitude not only towards his own personal learning but also showed care and support towards his fellow students.

“This award sends a powerful message to others that words simply cannot convey: with personal determination and a desire to help others, a university education and experience can be both transformational for the individual as well as being of great benefit to others.”

The WCIT awards were held at the Armourers’ Hall in the City of London and 12 universities from across the country put forward candidates based on their academic merit and individual attributes.

When James graduates next year, he aims to do a master’s degree and a PhD at Chichester and is planning on using the £250 prize money to fund his ambitions.
