The United Kingdom has joined members of the United Nations Security Council in voting to extend the mandate of the international security mission in Haiti, as the country prepares for its national elections.

Resolution 2829 (2026) was adopted on 29 September 2026, granting a six-month extension to the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) until 31 March 2027. The specialised multinational mission is tasked with reclaiming territory from armed groups and securing critical infrastructure that has been under gang control.

The resolution passed with 12 votes in favour and zero against. However, three members of the council—China, Russia, and Pakistan—abstained from the vote, citing concerns over the efficacy and funding of the force.

UK position and financial support

Jennifer MacNaughtan, the UK Minister Counsellor at the UN, delivered the UK’s Explanation of Vote, confirming Britain’s continued support for the mission. The UK government has focused its involvement on the mission’s accountability, contributing $7.5 million (£5.6 million) specifically to its human rights compliance mechanism.

The GSF was established to succeed the previous Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in September 2025.

The mission currently includes personnel from Chad, Jamaica, Mongolia, and Sri Lanka.

During the session, the UK emphasized that the extension is vital for providing the stability required for democratic processes.

Elections and logistical challenges

The timing of the extension is closely linked to Haiti’s upcoming political calendar. National elections are scheduled for 13 December 2026. The GSF is intended to secure transport corridors and polling stations to allow the population to participate safely.

According to UN meetings coverage, the mission receives logistical support from the UN Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH), though it remains a non-UN force rather than a standard peacekeeping operation. This distinction has been a point of debate within the Security Council, with some members questioning the long-term sustainability of the current funding model.

While Western nations, including the UK and the US, reported “discernible progress” in security operations, the abstaining members expressed reservations about the mission’s ability to meet its targets before the December elections. The next six months are expected to focus on ensuring nationwide coverage during the transition to a new government.
