A new expert body tasked with overhauling cancer services across the country has held its inaugural meeting today, 21 September 2026. The reformed National Cancer Board has been established to provide high-level oversight and ensure the NHS meets ambitious new diagnostic and treatment targets over the coming years.

Co-chaired by Health and Social Care Secretary Yvette Cooper and independent health economist Anita Charlesworth, the board is responsible for driving the delivery of more than 100 commitments outlined in the National Cancer Plan published in February 2026. The group’s primary focus is to improve early diagnosis rates and address long-standing inequalities in survival outcomes.

The government has set a firm deadline of March 2029 for the NHS to meet all cancer waiting time standards. This includes the 28-day Faster Diagnosis Standard, which requires patients to be told whether they have cancer, or have the disease ruled out, within four weeks of an urgent referral.

Meeting diagnostic and treatment targets

Recent data underscores the scale of the challenge facing the new board. In July 2026, 79.3% of patients received a diagnosis or an all-clear within the 28-day window. While this is close to the current national target of 80%, the board is tasked with ensuring consistent performance across all regions to prevent a “postcode lottery” in care standards.

Beyond general waiting times, the board includes dedicated expert leads to focus on specific areas of clinical concern. Dr Rob Metcalf has been appointed to lead on rare cancers, while Dr Dianne Addei will oversee work on health inequalities. There are also specific workstreams dedicated to improving outcomes for children and young people.

The National Cancer Board will meet regularly to hold health providers to account and to monitor the implementation of new technologies and screening programmes. By coordinating the 100-plus commitments of the National Cancer Plan, the body aims to modernise the patient pathway from the point of initial GP referral through to the completion of treatment.
