The medical drama The Pitt enters tonight’s 78th Primetime Emmy Awards with a formidable 25 nominations, propelled by a rare level of acclaim from the global medical community for its technical accuracy.

The ceremony takes place tonight, Monday 14 September 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. While the show has already secured its first trophies at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards last weekend—including a guest acting win for Ernest Harden Jr.—it remains the frontrunner for several major categories this evening.

Starring Noah Wyle as Dr Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch, the head of a Pittsburgh emergency room, the series has been praised by healthcare professionals for its “hyper-realism”. Unlike many traditional medical procedurals, the production employs consultants from Allegheny General Hospital to ensure workplace culture and medical procedures are portrayed faithfully.

The series has gained further attention for its unique structural hook: each 15-episode season covers a single 15-hour hospital shift in real-time, with each episode representing approximately one hour of the day. This format, according to critics and medical professionals alike, captures the specific pacing and mounting exhaustion inherent to emergency medicine.

The show marks a significant creative reunion for executive producers Noah Wyle and John Wells, alongside creator R. Scott Gemmill, who were all central figures in the long-running series ER. Beyond the lead performance, the Academy has recognised the show’s ensemble with nominations for supporting cast members including Katherine LaNasa, Sepideh Moafi, and Shawn Hatosy.

According to the official Television Academy listings, The Pitt is one of the most-nominated programmes of the year.

For viewers in the UK, the series became available to stream on HBO Max via Sky on 26 March 2026. While the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live in the US on NBC and Peacock, highlights of the ceremony are expected to follow on Sky for British audiences.
