A major police operation in Portsmouth concluded in the early hours of Monday morning following a standoff between protesters and officers at Eastney Marina.
The disorder broke out on Sunday, 6 September 2026, after a single large inflatable vessel carrying approximately 140 people arrived at the marina. The arrival, which has been described as a “mega-dinghy,” triggered a significant protest that saw hundreds of people block the road leading to the site to prevent the transfer of those on board to a processing centre.
The standoff ended at approximately 3am on Monday after Hampshire Police issued a formal dispersal order. During the height of the unrest, which involved between 300 and 500 protesters, two police vehicles sustained smashed windscreens.
Government and Police Reaction
Chief Secretary to the Treasury Emma Reynolds condemned the scenes, describing the protesters’ actions as “thuggish and intimidating behaviour.” Speaking on Monday morning, she emphasised that while the government is focused on securing borders, such disorder is unacceptable.
Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones warned that the incident had placed immense pressure on emergency services. She noted that the arrival represents a shift in trafficking patterns, with the vessel having launched from Normandy and travelling for approximately 10 hours across the Baie de Seine—a significantly longer and more western route than the typical Dover Strait crossings.
This incident follows a similar blockade in Dover on Saturday, 5 September, suggesting a coordinated increase in coastal protests across the South Coast.

A police dispersal order remains active in the Eastney area of Portsmouth until Monday evening, 7 September. Under this order, officers have the power to direct individuals to leave the designated area; failure to comply can lead to arrest.
While the road leading to Eastney Marina was blocked overnight, police confirmed it has since been cleared and traffic flow has returned to normal.
The incident has particular relevance for the wider region, including Chichester, which is situated approximately 18 miles from the marina via the A27. Hampshire and Sussex police forces frequently coordinate on regional disorder, and authorities have remained on high alert following the weekend’s events.
According to The Guardian, the 140 individuals who arrived on the vessel are expected to be transferred to the Manston processing centre in Kent for security and identity checks.
