Munya Chawawa to make stage debut in 1990s rave-themed Shakespeare

Munya Chawawa, the satirist who rose to prominence through viral social media sketches, is pivoting toward the classical stage. In September 2026, Chawawa will make his professional acting debut at the Chichester Festival Theatre, taking on one of Shakespeare’s most recognizable comedic roles.

Chawawa has described the transition as “jumping ship” from the ephemeral nature of social media to pursue more substantial acting opportunities. The move marks a strategic shift for the creator, who has spent years building a digital audience through rapid-response parody and character-driven commentary.

Chawawa is moving from the rapid-response nature of digital satire to the permanence of the classical stage.

A Rave-Era Adaptation

The production is a stylized adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, reimagined within the 1990s rave culture of Sussex. Set in 1994, the play will incorporate the political and cultural friction of the era, including references to John Major’s “Back to Basics” campaign and the rise of underground dance music.

Chawawa is cast as Nick Bottom, the weaver who famously undergoes a transformation into a donkey. The setting provides a unique backdrop for Bottom’s interactions with the fairy world, replacing the traditional Athenian forest with the high-energy, often illicit atmosphere of the early ’90s party scene.

The production is co-directed by Justin Audibert and Hannah Joss. Joining Chawawa in the cast are Eve Ponsonby as Titania and David Sturzaker as Oberon.

Bridging the Gap

The shift to theater appears to be part of a broader effort by Chawawa to foster engagement between young audiences and traditional arts. He is the founder of the Black Boys Theatre Club, an initiative aimed at encouraging young Black men to explore theater—a demographic that has historically been underrepresented in classical audiences.

By moving from short-form digital content to a month-long theatrical run, Chawawa is testing whether a digital-first following will follow a creator into the more rigid structures of the performing arts. For the Chichester Festival Theatre, the casting offers a bridge to a younger, internet-savvy audience while maintaining the institution’s focus on high-caliber classical work.

The production is scheduled to run from September 18 to October 17, 2026.
