The event took place on Wednesday, 15 April 2026, when the Mayor of Chichester, Councillor Sean McHale, welcomed pupils Phoebe, Kianoosh and Jessica for the civic learning day.
A day of civic visits
The pupils were collected from Kingsham Primary School before visiting the Council House, where they were robed for the day. Phoebe, who was named this year’s Junior Mayor, was also presented with the Junior Mayor’s chain of office.
The group’s first official engagement was at Chichester Fire Station. During the visit, the pupils toured the facilities, explored fire engines and learned about the work of West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.
The day also included a visit to Tangmere Military Aviation Museum before the pupils returned to the Council House for lunch in the Council Chamber.
What pupils discussed
As part of the programme, the pupils took part in a Junior Council Meeting at the Council House.
The verified council update says the discussion included activities the City Council could support within the parish and ideas for improving safety for young people in the community.
The meeting formed part of a wider day focused on giving the pupils a closer look at civic life in Chichester and the role local organisations play across the area.
How the day ended
Later in the day, the pupils visited The Novium Museum for a session on the city’s history, including Roman heritage.
The programme also included a visit to the South Downs Planetarium before the pupils returned to Kingsham Primary School.
The day ended with the tradition of planting a commemorative tree at the school.
