New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and musician Ed Sheeran have committed to donating a combined $4 million to humanitarian aid efforts in the Middle East, a move Kraft says was orchestrated by Sheeran to address the fallout following Macklemore’s removal from the “Loop” tour. Each has pledged $2 million toward regional relief, doubling the amount Macklemore had recently challenged Kraft to donate.
The announcement follows a period of significant instability for Sheeran’s global tour. Macklemore was removed from the lineup earlier this month following pro-Palestinian remarks and chants he led during a performance at MetLife Stadium. In the wake of his exit, Macklemore pledged $1 million—his entire projected earnings from the tour—to six organizations supporting Palestinians, including UNRWA, and publicly challenged Kraft to match the sum.
Kraft Claims a Preemptive Agreement
While the timing of the $4 million pledge coincides with Macklemore’s public challenge, Kraft stated that the donation was already in motion before any public pressure was applied. According to Kraft, Sheeran reached out to him privately to propose a joint charitable contribution as a way to pivot the tour’s narrative toward humanitarian support.
Kraft’s involvement in the tour’s logistics became a point of contention after he reportedly blocked Macklemore from performing at Gillette Stadium. Kraft cited what he described as the rapper’s “broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery” as the reason for the venue ban. This individual stadium ban allegedly expanded into a broader industrial conflict; Macklemore has since claimed that Kraft rallied other major stadium owners to issue an ultimatum to Sheeran, effectively forcing the headliner to remove Macklemore from the tour or risk losing access to key venues.
