Selsey’s Hidden Garden has been awarded the highest possible rating of “Outstanding” by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The volunteer-led community project received the Level 5 recognition as part of the “It’s Your Neighbourhood” category in the South & South East in Bloom (SSEIB) competition.
The award was presented during a ceremony held at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey in late September. The “Outstanding” status is reserved for community gardening groups that demonstrate exceptional levels of community participation, environmental responsibility, and horticultural achievement.
Managed by the Selsey Community Forum, the garden is situated in School Lane (PO20 9EH), located directly behind Selsey Library. The site serves as a collaborative hub, involving partners such as Selsey Men in Sheds and the youth organisation Youth Dream.
Community and Horticulture
The garden operates as a resource for residents of all ages and abilities. Beyond its aesthetic value, the project focuses on practical horticulture and social support. Organic produce grown on the site is regularly shared with elderly local residents who participate in activities at the garden, while younger volunteers gain experience in gardening through the partnership with Youth Dream.
The garden is frequently featured as part of the National Garden Scheme, highlighting its role as a significant community asset within the Chichester District.
