Under Governor Maura Healey’s visionary leadership, The state of Massachusetts is taking bold steps to expand legal services for migrants residing in emergency shelters. In collaboration with the Executive Office of Health and Human Services, Governor Healey recently announced that the state’s Office for Refugees and Immigrants will extend additional legal aid to migrants entering emergency shelters. These services will be provided by agencies with a proven track record in case management and legal assistance for refugees. Governor Healey’s commitment to assisting families who have come to Massachusetts for a better life is evident. She articulated her vision: “In the last few months, we have seen many families come to Massachusetts looking for a place to live and work, and we want to help people make this a reality as soon as possible.” The expanded legal services will be available through eight organizations, covering a network of 40 shelters, and will facilitate migrants in filing essential documents such as work authorizations and asylum applications.
Eligibility and Focus
These legal services will be accessible to new arrivals and asylum seekers who have entered the United States through the CBP One app pre-scheduled appointment system. However, it’s crucial to note that families who are undocumented or not officially acknowledged by federal authorities will not qualify for these services. Massachusetts accommodates around 6,500 families in its shelters, encompassing new arrivals and long-term residents.

Earlier this year, Governor Healey declared a state of emergency in Massachusetts due to the surging numbers of migrants seeking refuge within the state’s borders. In response to this crisis, she activated 250 members of the National Guard to provide support at shelters. In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, she called on the Biden administration to address immigration laws, provide financial assistance, and remove barriers to work permits for migrants.

One noteworthy action includes granting Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelan nationals who arrived before August. This move is set to protect approximately 470,000 migrants from deportation and enable them to participate in the American workforce actively.
