Green Party leader Zack Polanski has been confirmed as the candidate to contest the upcoming by-election in Holborn and St Pancras, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
The selection was finalised on Friday 11 September 2026 after a ballot of local party members. Mr Polanski, who has led the Green Party since September 2025, defeated local councillor Hamza Chowdhury to secure the nomination for the North London seat.
The by-election, scheduled for Thursday 8 October 2026, was triggered when Sir Keir Starmer resigned his seat in the House of Commons on 1 September. The move followed a period of significant political transition that saw Andy Burnham take over as Prime Minister.
Mr Polanski described the Green Party as the “underdog” in the constituency but insisted the party “can win” the seat.
The Labour Challenge
The Green Party leader faces a significant challenge from the Labour Party, which has selected Sagal Abdi-Wali to defend the seat. Ms Abdi-Wali, a former child refugee, currently serves as the leader of Camden Council and has deep roots in the local community.
According to ITV News, the by-election will serve as a key test for the new Labour government under Mr Burnham, as well as a measure of the Green Party’s national momentum following their leadership change last year.
Constituency Context
The Holborn and St Pancras constituency covers a diverse area of London, including Camden Town, Bloomsbury, and King’s Cross. It has historically been a safe Labour seat, held by Sir Keir Starmer since 2015 before his departure from Parliament this month.
Voters in the area will head to the polls on 8 October. Further candidates from other major and minor parties are expected to be confirmed as the deadline for nominations approaches. Residents in the constituency must be registered to vote and are reminded that photo ID will be required at polling stations under national legislation.
