Since it was first announced in January 2023, Anyone But You has been one of the most-anticipated date movies of the year. And it’s easy to blame the excitement on Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, who play the lead roles. Fans have a good idea of what kind of chemistry the two main characters will have on screen based on the first pictures taken on set. Anyone But You is an R-rated love comedy movie directed and co-written by Will Gluck, who is best known for his work on Easy A. It is said to be a modernized version of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. In the story, two people who hate each other get together at a wedding and have to act like a couple, “for better or worse.”
Powell and Sweeney teased their upcoming project at CinemaCon 2023 with a trailer for Anyone But You, which was released early this year. Other than that, nothing else is known about the movie. However, based on the production photos that the stars keep posting on social media, we can guess that Anyone But You will bring back the hot rom-coms of the past. Fans won’t have to wait until next year to see the movie because it’s coming out in December. See our full guide below to learn more about the movie’s story, cast, and characters. What Is ‘Anyone But You’ Plot?
Anyone But You is based on the standard “enemy-to-friends/lovers” plot. It is said to be based on Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” In this silly comedy, two people who hate each other very much get into a lot of trouble to get back at each other.
Here is the original plot summary for the movie:
In the edgy comedy Anyone But You, Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) look like the perfect couple, but after an amazing first date something happens that turns their fiery hot attraction ice cold – until they find themselves unexpectedly thrust together at a destination wedding in Australia. So they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple.
Will Gluck directs Anyone But You, and he and Ilana Wolpert wrote the story together. The future project is the director’s return to the genre after making About Last Night (2014), a Kevin Hart movie. Gluck is best known for the Peter Rabbit movie series, but he has also directed hit love comedies like Friends with Benefits, which starred Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, and Easy A, which starred Emma Stone and Penn Badgley. He also helped make, direct, and produce The Michael J. Fox Show and was an executive producer for Woke on Hulu and Sneakerheads on Netflix. The next projects Gluck will work on are a live-action version of The Aristocats from Disney and a drama called Down the Rabbit Hole.
Wolpert is best known for her work on the hit Disney+ show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. She worked with Gluck on the book Anyone But You. The creation of the mockumentary series Another Period has also been linked to her.
Along with Jeff Kirschenbaum and Joe Roth, Gluck is also a producer on Anyone But You. Sweeney, Alyssa Altman, Jacqueline Monetta, and Natalie Seller are the only women on the executive producer team.
