The Uckfield High Street Post Office at 15 High Street officially ceased trading on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, leaving the town without its primary postal hub for what is expected to be a six-month period.
The closure is a direct result of a major restructuring at TG Jones, a retail partner that took over high street WHSmith stores in June 2025.
While Post Office Ltd has stated it is actively seeking a new retail partner to host the service in Uckfield, reports indicate that a replacement branch is unlikely to open for around six months.
Residents have described the loss of the central branch and the resulting travel distance to alternative sites as “diabolical,” particularly for elderly and disabled users. While the town’s new Banking Hub opened on 26 August 2026 to provide community cash access, it does not offer the full range of postal and parcel services previously available on the High Street.

For those requiring postal services in the interim, Uckfield Town Council has highlighted nearby branches that remain operational. These include:
- Ridgewood Post Office: Located at Post Horn Close (TN22 5LU).
- Five Ash Down Post Office: Located at Five Ash Down (TN22 3AN).
The impact of the TG Jones restructuring is not limited to East Sussex. The crisis is set to move into West Sussex later this month, with the TG Jones branch in Rustington scheduled to close on 23 September 2026.
Post Office Ltd has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the Uckfield closure and maintains that it is committed to restoring services to the town centre as soon as a suitable new location and partner are secured. However, the anticipated half-year delay remains a significant concern for residents who rely on the High Street counter for daily transactions.
